Alu is an Alpha Demon that appears in Chapter III after defeating the Peekaboo Demon in the basement of the New Haven Apartment Complex.
Appearance[]
Alu has a horned, Goat-like head and bloody tendrils and tentacles protruding out of his body. He has red, shiny eyes.
Biography[]
October 29th, 1987[]
John gets a letter from Father Garcia to investigate an apartment complex to see if the cult is trying to summon Malphas there. Another reason of going is that Lisa, his childhood friend, sends him a letter asking for help because her neighbors aren't letting her leave.
Exploring Room 5A, there is a large seal covering a door. Walking into the bathroom in the same room, John finds instructions on how to remove the seal; called Seal of Alu. John has to find and exorcise a blood-stained dagger and a face mask to remove the seal.
After reading the note, the dagger found in Room 2A will now be blood-stained. Exorcising him will remove one of the seals.
The face mask is found in the basement section of the apartment. He cannot be reached when initially entering the building because it's pitch-black and rotoscope animation plays of the Peekaboo Demon covering John's face from his perspective, killing him. What to do is, after putting his crucifix on a dumbwaiter, has to go all the way down to the basement to retrieve it, avoiding the thralls and the Peekaboo Demon's grasp. After retrieving it in the basement, the lights throughout the building comes on and in the next room is the mask. Exorcising him will remove the other seal on the door, now unlocked.
Defeating the Peekaboo Demon, John will walk out of the basement and get ambushed by Alu, possessing him. During the possession process, John stares directly at Malphas and his face becomes massacred. John is now purple and is uncontrollable for a while, but he'll come back to normal.
Going to the now unlocked door in Room 5A, John will see Lisa standing in the center of five Wretches. After a brief conversation, John tries to tell her that they should leave but she says, "I'M NOT LISA" and starts slowly walking towards him.
Battle Strategy[]
This boss fight can be a little tricky if it's your first playthrough. When the battle starts, Lisa will start slowly walking towards John. Direct contact will kill him. You need to hold the crucifix up to her for a while and Alu will leave her body.
Alu will split into five copies of himself and go into the Wretches nearby. You need to exorcise each of the Wretches to find the real version of Alu; all the other ones will have Ghosts come out. Exorcising the right one will have Alu come out and he starts roaring, giving you a decent amount of time to deal damage. However, Alu still has a hitbox and will kill you if you're too close.
If you take too long finding the right one, Alu will make a beeline towards John and possess him. John will be purple again and you don't have a lot of control of him. He will try to go towards Lisa and kill her. After a couple of seconds, Alu will leave John's body and re-enters Lisa, repeating the process.
Making sure to not kill Lisa is the most difficult part of the whole fight since she will always stay close to John when Alu is in one of the Wretches. The best plan is to try to keep a distance between her whenever Alu is in one of the Wretches, even if you found the real one of him since he will possess her again, killing you instantly if you're already close to her. With enough time, Alu will be banished, and Lisa moves to the other room.
If you accidentally killed Lisa, the fight immediately ends, and John's color turns back to blue. He then says "Oh no... Lisa. I'm so sorry. THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT." Although her death doesn't result into a game over, he will not remove the seal to Tiffany's room, thus locking you from getting the best ending of Chapter III since you have to defeat all secret bosses to get the ending.
(Tip: You could always close the game and reopen it when this happens since the last save was when the battle started, giving you a chance to redo the battle in your liking.)
With Alu defeated, John can go back to his car and leave the building. However, if you want to get the best ending, John has to play the Elevator Game to make it into the Unseen World version of the 7th floor, where Tiffany and her Demon lurks within the shadows.
October 31st, 1987[]
After some questioning between Gary and John, they engage in battle. During the fight, Gary has a chance of summoning apparitions of Demons and entities John has faced throughout the series, including Alu. Unlike before, Alu and all other apparitions cannot be banished and will make a beeline towards him. John is supposed to avoid them while he's slowed down by Gary's trident. If he's hit, John will drop his crucifix and knocked to the ground. If he doesn't retrieve his crucifix in time, Gary will capture him and perform the Second Death ritual on him, killing him. Otherwise, this is the last time Alu appears.
Theories[]
Alu doesn't seem to be associated with Gary or his cult, rather he was summoned by Tiffany sometime after Gary took over the apartment complex. What I'm thinking is, after Tiffany found out Gary wants to use Amy instead of her, so she performed her makeshift Second Death ritual by using sacrifices that were intended for the Peekaboo Demon to take. She also sabotaged Gary's plans of using Lisa as a vessel for the UNSPEAKABLE by summoning Alu. Alu put a seal over Lisa's room so that the cult can't access her room. This makes Tiffany the center of attention. She might've also wanted to protect Lisa in some way by blocking the cult's access to her room since it doesn't seem like Tiffany wanted to hurt her friend, but that's hard to say.

Trivia[]
- Alu and Malphas are not the same entity. John constantly sees hallucinations of Malphas during his journey at the apartment building, including during the cutscene where John gets possessed by Alu for the first time. Malphas' illusions implies that Gary successfully summoned the entity while John and Father Garcia were busy looking around for Nate and Jason Martin.
- Gary speculates in one note that Alu may have been summoned by Tiffany and says that Alu himself put his seal over the room Lisa is trapped in, providing more evidence that Alu doesn't originate from the cult.
- Alu is possibly based off of Alû: a Demon in Mesopotamian mythology that scares and torments people at night while they sleep[1].
- In the 2017 Demo of Chapter III, if possessed John kills Lisa it will lead to "Ending II: GARY LOVES YOU" where John says: "Oh no... Lisa. I'm so sorry. THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT."
- The line, "YOU ARE MINE, PRIEST!" was originally used after reading a newspaper article in Chapter II. With Alu being connected to a Mesopotamian Demon, it could mean that he's the one who's actively creating these horrible nightmares for John in Chapter II and Prologue. However, it's likely that the line was reused since I'm sure Alu wasn't supposed to be referenced/included in that chapter.
- This line was probably coming from Amy's Demon since Amy appears right in front of John after he's done reading the article.
