The Crucible is a containment chamber in which John must defeat Gary to put a stop to the Profane Sabbath.
John will only be able to enter the Crucible if he has defeated the Mother and Child, Tiffany, and the Unholy Spirit to remove the seal blocking the entrance.
John enters the Crucible
History[]
Prior to John's arrival on October 31, 1987, the Crucible was used by Gary to house the body of his mother, Miriam Bell, as well as Amy Martin.
After surviving a battle against Gary, John is saved by Father Garcia, where they then follow Gary to the Crucible. If John has defeated all three demons that make up the Unholy Trinity, Garcia tells John that he alone must jump into the Crucible and defeat Gary once and for all. Otherwise Garcia will instruct him to find some way to block the entrance and delay the Profane Sabbath.
After John enters the Crucible, he finds himself in a dark and dilapidated Martin's house. There are notes littered around the area that say "GARY IS A NORMAL HUMAN BEING JUST LIKE YOU AND ME", and "GARY LOVES YOU", all except the one nearby the staircase to the second floor, detailing the birth of Gary.

MARCH 18, 1934 Miriam is ready. We will perform the ritual according to her instructions tonight. MARCH 19, 1934 We successfully gave the Second Death to Miriam. We have been passing living newborns through the newly-made Portal as quickly as we can get them. So far there has been no response from the other side. MARCH 23, 1934 After several days of sacrifices, we finally got a response. A tiny hand reached out from the Portal. We took the hand and pulled out a baby boy. It appears to be a normal human baby just like you and me. We named it Gary. |

Upon entering the attic of the "house," John finds a transfigured Gary kneeling down in front of his mother's skeleton, strewn upside down. Gary invites John to be the first mortal to witness and be consumed by the Profane Sabbath before engaging with him in a final battle. Malphas joins in some time later to fight alongside Gary before they both collide with Miriam's body to form Super Miriam.
After John destroys Super Miriam and Malphas with a purifying blaze, Amy appears and sends Gary back to Hell for failing to complete the Profane Sabbath. She then forgives John for failing to save her from her demons, now allowing him to complete his prayer of exorcism and finally finish what he started.
Trivia[]
The stone slab covering the entrance to the Crucible has three symbols on it, each related to demonology from the three Abrahamic faiths of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. The symbols and their meanings, from left to right, are:
- جِنّ : The Arabic word for "jinn"
- ⸸ : An inverted cross, a symbol for Satanism and demons in Christian mythology
- דיבוק : The Hebrew word for "dybbuk"
