The Graveyard Maze Demon is a demonic enemy that appears in FAITH: Chapter II.

Alike all the other demons haunting Gallup Cemetery, this demon is loosely affiliated with one of the thralls within Save Family Tomb and somewhat connected to the short story of Note #5 from Chapter II, detailing somebody who has been "freed" and will no longer put up with their violent alcoholic father, constant bullying from other people because of their scars, and insistently using pills and needles.

Appearance[]

Its body consist of a gray shambling mass, similar to most demons, and has a cone-shaped head. It's unclear if the red dot is supposed to be an eye or a gaping hole, akin to Second Death victims.

Biography[]

Like nearly all demons, they don't have much of a personality besides being evil, so we're going to cut to when its relevant.

Unknown Time[]

It's important to analyze Note #5 from Chapter II[1] because the individual detailed there, who we're going to assume is a thrall named Troy Ingles (this'll be explained shortly), is affiliated with this demon.

The note begins with Troy stating that he's, "been freed" He no longer has to deal with an abusive alcoholic father nor hiding his cuts and bruises from him. He doesn't have to handle people ridiculing and kicking him around anymore. No longer does he have to use pills & needles and he'll never get made fun of again.

Troy continues that by day his body withers away, but by nightfall, he glorifies that his mind explores forbidden power and worlds, all orchestrated by beings of pure darkness. He states that he was entrusted to the secret knowledge of, in what he puts it, "the demon's seal" Troy deviates to a small tangent on how to create this seal and finishes the note with a plan, "I will lure them into the woods. Then I will show them my power."

This note explains why Troy willingly inducted himself into the cult, the Eternal Order of the Second Death, physical abuse from his father, frequent use of drugs to numb his pain, and rampant bullying pushed him off towards the deep end. His backstory's central theme is slightly different among the other two important thralls shown in Chapter II as they involuntarily joined the cult due to their past struggle and hardship. Troy did not have an easy life, but he was far more eager to perform satanic rituals and activities compared to the others. His inclination with the cult and their principals would soon become his downfall.

The Graveyard Demon's connection to this note compared to the other two demons to their respective thralls isn't too obvious. Chapter II's gameplay suggests it's connected. The best theory we can come up with is that it's a manifestation of whatever Troy has been diddling with the knowledge he's learned from "beings of pure darkness".

Between September 22nd to 27th, 1987[]

To keep this undetermined date brief and relevant enough for the Graveyard Maze Demon, Troy, a cult member named Angel Nogales, and another named Sandra Attwood, were sacrificially murdered for some kind of undetailed ritual nearby. The Sterling Police Department found their bodies off into the dense woodland nearby a cemetery, aptly named Gallup Cemetery, and identified them. A newspaper article was published[2] shortly after their investigation, where investigators state that they believe the victims were ultimately killed in some kind of paganistic ritual. They plead for the Sterling community to contact authorities if there's any leads behind the murders.

This article, Note #18 from Chapter II, was important to analyze because it's heavily suggested that the areas John will eventually explore in his dream/Chapter II, Gallup Cemetery in particular, were affected by recent murders and disappearances that all connect to the cult in some way or another. John essentially dreams of the locations and the demons he'll eventually face, including the Mist Demon, in some vein attempt of making a significant difference as if he was there[3].

September 28th, 1987 (Chapter II)[]

A week after John's second failed exorcism with Amy, he experiences his worst nightmare yet.

John falls asleep like any other day and experiences his worst nightmare yet.

The dream begins with him standing in the middle of five pebbles. He meanders through the trees and unlocks a gate leading to Gallup Cemetery. A tomb, named Save Family Tomb, lies in the middle of the cemetery. All the other nearby gates are locked, so John has no choice but to investigate inside.

Enter the Spirit House[]

The cramped tomb has three thralls giving John a cold stare, either because of his priestly outfit or they're dead.

They sit immobile as John grins at his reflection at the end of the tomb.

Spirits flee from the bodies and scatter throughout the area. John exits the tomb and has to track each of them down in order to move beyond the cemetery.

Walking to the right, upward, and solving a puzzle, the Graveyard Maze Demon manifests on top of what looks like a casket. It greets John with, "WELCOME, SINNER!"

It's attack pattern of teleporting in a sporadic fashion and yelling something unintelligible is somewhat similar to the Mirror Demon, a secret boss in Chapter I. John banishes the demon, who screams, "I WILL SEE THEE SOON!" and bursting into a pool of blood. It drops Note #5. If John decides to check Save Family Tomb before encountering the other two demons, the thrall with unkept hair is nowhere in sight.

This goes hand-in-hand that the Graveyard Maze Demon is somewhat affiliated with Troy, which apply to the other thralls and their respective demons. Troy's demon doesn't entirely correlate with Note #5 unlike the Mist and Umbilical Cord Demon. This one seems to be more "optimistic" or "eager" to kill John compared to the others, which is in vain as to how Troy was so willingly to do satanic activity. There's not a lot going on with this one.

October 31st, 1987[]

We flashforward a little over a month later to John fighting against the cult leader, Gary, within an underground tunnel system named Garyland. During the battle, Gary has a chance of summoning various demons and creatures John has encountered in the past, including the Graveyard Maze Demon. Alike all of the past enemies, they're red silhouettes, cannot be repelled by the crucifix, and knock John to the ground if they make contact with him. It's important to point out that Gary can summon two different versions of a woman named Tiffany, signifying that these red apparitions are solely phantoms and are not literally summoned from where they used to be to kick down John. They purely function as bad memories. This is the last time the Graveyard Maze Demon makes its appearance.

Trivia[]

  • In the third phase of Miriam's boss fight, she reuses the same attack pattern from every demonic enemy within Chapter II, including this demon. She teleports around in sporadic fashion and occasionally screams.
    • This attack is likely borrowed from the Mirror Demon as well since both enemies essentially do the same thing.
