The Gray Figure is a shadowy character seen in Chapter I. He reappears to help John in Chapter II.

Biography[]

The Gray Figure is Father Garcia without his signature priest collar. When approached in Chapter I, he runs away in a panic, likely due to not suspecting to come across anybody else besides Michael in the Forest since it's the middle of the night. When he runs away, he drops a red nose.

We know that the gray figure is Father Garcia. However, the gray figure has its own dedicated wiki page since John does not know who it is yet and there's some plot points unique to the figure.

Before September 20th, 1987[]

One day, Father Garcia attempts an exorcism with Michael in his basement. However, Michael's demon was too strong, he broke off his chains and escaped the basement. Grabbing a nose in his closet, Garcia walks out of his room to find Michael partially eating a bystander. Before he could say anything, Michael jumps out of a window and flees into the outskirts of Connecticut. With how dangerous Michael is, Garcia plans to capture him so that he can perform the exorcism again. Taking off his priest collar, Garcia follows Michael in pursuit.

September 21st, 1987[]

In the morning of the 21st, a newspaper is released where a Sterling local reported seeing a naked white man nearby Snake Meadow Hill Road. Realizing that it's Michael, Father Garcia parks nearby the forest later that the night to find him. However, he does not expect to encounter anybody else in the Forest. So, when he accidentally bumps into John, he's startled and runs away, accidentally dropping his clown nose. Walking around the Forest, Garcia finds a desolate house and scopes out the area before going inside by peeping through a window. Once again, he gets startled by John and runs away.

"Father and Son" Ending[]

When John obtains a rifle, he walks to a shack he's been to earlier and shoots the gray figure. Returning to his silver sedan, John tries to recite a prayer but gets ambushed by Michael, who was hiding in his back seat. A letter is shown where Father Garcia tries to tell Cardinal Gifford that he cannot return Michael to his parents yet because the demon that's controlling him is too powerful. He tries to include a recent photograph of Michael but it's mysteriously missing.

"When Faith Endures" Canonical Ending[]

When John obtains a rifle, he doesn't shoot anything, and tries to return to his car. However, Michael tries to ambush him, so John had to shoot him in self-defense. Bleeding, Michael stumbles onto a road and gets ran over by an oncoming truck. Driving away, John monologues if he did the right thing. The following day, a newspaper article is released where the Sterling Police Department urge animal experts to figure out what animal got ran over. Although not explicitly shown or detailed, Father Garcia likely saw Michael's corpse while he was walking back to his car since he was never able to find him.

September 28th, 1987[]

A week passes after John's second failed exorcism with Amy. He experiences his worst nightmare yet and gets cornered by Miriam in Malphas' House. Muttering, "My little one...", Miriam attempts to grab John's neck but recoils in pain and disappears as the gray figure comes in to save the day.

The gray figure doesn't introduce himself as Father Garcia since John doesn't really know who that is yet, he only saw a glimpse of the gray figure back in Chapter I. Father Garcia tells him not to be afraid and the two of them can banish Miriam together if he protects him while reciting the 91st Psalms. In the next room, the two of them face Miriam and an oncoming wave of thralls. John previals and bests Miriam. She stumbles and screams as her body evaporates into the Red Demon, who then transforms into the UNSPEAKABLE. As the entity emits dazzling red lights, John wakes up from the nightmare in a panic.

From this point forward, Father Garcia starts to send letters to John about his next goals, so this is the last time we see the gray figure.

Theories[]

  • Father Garcia took off his priest collar and grabbed his clown nose because he didn't want to scare off Michael from returning back to his house to resume the exorcism.
    • As we can see, Michael is very aggressive against all types of people, but especially priests since he's been held captive for three months. We can see this since Michael mistakes John as Father Garcia, judging by some of his vulgar lines. Garcia's backstory is a mystery, he very well could've been a clown as a secondary job, and tried to come out as friendly to Michael so that he can be subdued.
  • Father Garcia is a gray outline in Chapter II because, in John's dreams, he couldn't see Garcia in detail because it was dark outside and ran away when approached. He's wearing a collar this time because John senses that he's a good character at the very least.
