Molly is a character that is only mentioned throughout the series via notes. She is the ex-wife of John Ward.

Biography[]

Before September 21st, 1986[]

At an unspecified date (though known it was before John became a priest), John and Molly met each other. It’s implied that Molly lived with John due to a double bed being in John’s bedroom. The exact nature of their relationship is unknown, but judging by the notes they appeared to have a loving relationship.

September 21st, 1986[]

On this day, Father Allred and John drive to the Martin House due to getting reports of the Martin's daughter, Amy, being possessed. This exorcism was a failure, during the struggle Amy killed Father Allred and her parents. John was able to escape alive and received help from the police and ambulance outside.

September 23, 1986[]

With the police seeing the bloody aftermath of the exorcism, John and Amy were detained. Due to the both of them being mentally unwell, they were sent to the Yale Psychiatric Institute. They were restrained there while the case was impending over the deaths of Amy's parents and Father Allred. John's care was supervised Dr. Spinel around this time. Dr. Spinel uses an in-vivo approach of giving John medication to combat his anxiety, attempting to convince him what happened in the Martin House was not supernatural.

October 31st, 1986[]

With clearance from Dr. McGlashan, Dr. Spinel releases John from his care. He notes that John has been successful with his counseling sessions and feels like he can be returned back into society. While John was in the institution, the Catholic Church denounces him as a priest. The exact reason is unknown, although likely because they do not want to be still attached to a man who was mentally unwell enough to be sent to the psych ward. John returns home with Molly and retains his priest outfit and crucifix. Amy remains in the institution. Molly and John get married shortly after his release from the institution. [1]

September 12th, 1987[]

Almost a year has passed since John was released, and it seems like him and Molly were able to live well. However, on this day, Amy escapes from the institution. Her escape is a catalyst to the upcoming events of the entire series, where her escape is released to the public and the Sterling Police Department are trying to track her down.

September 12th to 21st, 1987[]

It's unknown which day but John experiences a dream. In it, Amy reaches out to him that he needs to return to the Martin House on the anniversary of the failed exorcism to rescue her. Practicing using his crucifix on a demon, John wakes up and prepares himself to return to the house by putting on his old outfit. John progressively experiences more and more nightmares before the anniversary.

September 21st, 1987[]

Before John drives to the house, he writes a letter to Molly saying that officials from the Catholic Church might contact her to give her a different story about what happened to him (implying that what he's about to do will kill him or disappear). He tells her what really happened during the first exorcism, where Amy strangled her parents with their intestines, killed Father Allred with her hands, and cut off the power to the house. He says that the newspaper surrounding the incident is not true. John writes that the nightmares he's experiencing are real and that he has to return to the house and save Amy. He ends his letter that he loves her and is sorry if he never returns.

John drives to the Martin House and the majority of Chapter I takes place. He failed saving Amy again and left her to die in the forest after she jumped off of her attic window. Heading home after self-defending himself from a creature, tension between the two builds up. Molly believes that John is becoming delusional again and can't help him with his predicament this time. His treatment at the institution did not fully help him believe that nothing paranormal happened at the house. She's very concerned about him but can't stand dealing with him anymore.

September 28th, 1987[]

It's been a week after John's second fail attempt of exorcising Amy. While sleeping, John has a terrible nightmare, and the majority of Chapter II takes place. When John wakes up, he reads a letter left behind by Molly, where she says that she can't do it anymore and that she'll always loves him. She left him while he was going through a vivid nightmare.

October 28th, 1987[]

Still over a month later, John still retains this same departing letter on his person. No mention of her is made for the rest of the game.

Trivia[]

  • Molly was originally named Karen. When The Unholy Trinity was released, her name was changed due to Airdorf stating that he did not want players to associate the character with the 'Karen' memes. (Somebody add a reference to this)
    • Unholy Trinity originally had an error in which the note from her in Chapter III still reads as 'Karen'. This was corrected in the 1.1 update.
  • There is no in-game evidence for Molly being John's wife. We only know this because Airdorf referred to her as such in a Steam discussion thread.[2]
