Nate and Jason Martin are major characters within the FAITH series.

Biography[]

Nate and Jason are the two youngest children of the Martin family. Their overworld sprite color is purple, like Amy's.

May 3rd, 1980[]

Cindy Martin, supposed to give birth to twin boys, suffered a tragic miscarriage. The loss of her boys was too much for her to mentally process, so she convinced herself that they were still alive. The babies would have been named Nate and Jason, respectively. Bob, her husband, noticed her delusions and contacted a psychologist named Dr. Morris, a long-time friend of his, to help her understand the situation. Although Cindy made progress, she occasionally relapsed into bad habits of preparing birthday parties for the twins, or drawing pictures and labeling them as if Nate or Jason drew them. She also decorates their room and keeps childish toys in them as if they were still around.

Sometime in 1986[]

Bob, Dr. Morris, and his friends travel to Nicaragua as missionaries to spread the word of Christianity during an ongoing civil war, leaving Cindy and Amy alone in the house. Close to Amy's 17th birthday, Bob ships home a doll he received while working as a considerate attempt to be a part of her special day. Unfortunately, Amy was not ecstatic, as she had hoped for a phone to help deal with her deep isolation, while Cindy found it creepy. Worst of all, however, this doll acted as a catalyst for upcoming events where Cindy's delusions worsen.

May 3rd, 1986[]

On the sixth anniversary of the twins' miscarriage, Cindy prepares another birthday for the twins as if they were still alive. During the (alleged) birthday party, one of her Book Club friends, Nancy, spotted "a tall man dressed in dark clothing" watching from nearby; she waited to call Cindy later that night, too startled to bring it up during the party. Cindy believes that this person was talking to one of the twins but wonders why she never saw that man. Planning to contact a Sterling sheriff to identify the man, Cindy wished Bob would return soon from his service work.

May 4th, 1986[]

Cindy suffered a grave delusion where the twins came to the house with blood on their hands, having been messing with a decimated deer carcass nearby. Although she thought coyotes were the culprit, she was nonetheless creeped out.

September of 1986[]

Things only get worse when, previously, Amy decided to ignore her parent's wishes and go to a get-together with Gary, one of the coworkers at a clinic she used to intern. When she returned, Cindy noticed that Amy had some kind of condition, putting her on edge.

Come September, Cindy began to feel completely uncomfortable in the house; at her breaking point, she could no longer stand to be anywhere near Amy. She described the atmosphere in the house as slanted and warped whenever she gets close to her daughter. She also heard voices omitting from the forest at night, so she kept the twins inside at all times. Cindy wants to contact a doctor about Amy's worsening condition, but she was against leaving the twins alone in the house with Amy. Even if she could, her car keys had gone missing, while the phone line stopped working during the day. Despite all of this, she found comfort in Bob's impending return. When he did, he was disheartened to see the changes in both Amy and Cindy's behavior, particularly the latter's strengthened delusions about the twins.

During one of Cindy's counseling sessions, Dr. Morris noted her mentioning finding replacements for the twins' souls to inhabit and that they were directly contacting her. Startled, he tried to get Bob's attention on how to handle her increasingly-severe relapse. He also wondered how Cindy thought of "replacements," connecting it to a topic they discussed with one of the locals in Nicaragua.

FAITH - Nate's Drawing (Kitchen Note)
FAITH - Birthday Invite (Well Note)

A year after a failed attempt to exorcize Amy which resulted in her parents' deaths, John Ward returns to the Martin household in pursuit of her to finish what he started, although he had been denounced as a priest. Parking nearby Snake Meadow Hill Road, he walked into the forest to find the house . While exploring, he comes across a birthday invitation slip for the twin still hanging were Cindy had put them up more than a year ago. Inside the house, John found finds letters left behind by Cindy, where she talked about her time with Amy and the twins, as well as a drawing by Nate on the fridge. Although he had been to the house before, he had not been made aware that the twins were not real and thus believed the children were still alive.

After John tries to exorcize Amy and she wounds herself to near death by falling out of a window, he leaves, and soon after Gary's cult arrive to collect her. Learning of John's interference in their plan, they decide to take advantage of John's misunderstanding about the twins.

September 22nd to September 27th, 1987[]

Ch2 P Boys and Miriam

John experiences a nightmare of banishing the Cornfield Maze Demon and walking inside Snake Meadow Hill Church. Unlocking the seal to the basement, he came across a demon lurking in the darkness. While trying to exorcise the demon, he spotted multiple things in the corner of his eye, including the twins running away. After banishing it, he walked out and saw one of the twins running towards the altar. Following the boy, he finds thralls seated on benches. John sees the twins eerily standing still, but when he tries to approach them, a nun suddenly appears next to them and shouts, "HERE I AM". Before John wakes up from the nightmare, she says, "My little one."

September 28th, 1987[]

John experiences his worst nightmare yet where in the Gallup Cemetery, he finds an obituary about Cindy and Bob after exorcising a tombstone, which mentions that Nate, Jason, and Amy survived the aftermath of the accident, further cementing to John that the children were real.

Exploring the Candy Tunnels, he comes across the Basement Demon again. Like before, he occasionally spots the twins running in the darkness. Banishing it, John follows a thrall and teleports into Malphas' House.

MiriamCutscene4

Before coming across the nun, Miriam, he spots the twins running in the darkness again while warding off Blind Ones. Unlocking a door, Miriam suddenly appears and tries to grab John. But, in the nick of time, a gray figure appears and repels her with his crucifix. Teaming up, the two follow and fight her. With enough time, Miriam stumbles and screams before her body evaporates into a Red Demon before becoming the UNSPEAKABLE itself before John wakes up breathing heavily.

Walking to his front door after reading Molly's departing letter, he finds a letter from Father Garcia, explaining that they must find Nate and Jason Martin because he found evidence that the cult is planning to use them to summon a powerful demon named Malphas. He says that he'll contact him whenever he gets an update on their whereabouts and ends his letter with "We must not let them do what they did to Amy!" An exhausted John gets into his car and drives to an unknown destination. He monologues that his nightmares are getting worse but tries to gain closure with Amy, saying that his work with her is done. He gains confidence to press on by stopping the cult from summoning Malphas and finding the Martin Twins. He pleads for God's mercy before driving away, knowing that whatever he will come across will be his biggest test in faith yet.

Unbeknownst to John, Father Garcia was the grey man who was prowling the forest around the Martin home; he had been investigating as well but, same as with John, he did not know the twins were not real. The cult likely let slip false information as a means to bait the priests into a trap.

October 28th, 1987[]

After a month, John, rereading Father Garcia's letter, gets a new letter from him that he could not find the twins in the state foster care system but instructs him to investigate a clinic Amy used to work at in hopes of finding where the cult intend to summon Malphas. John gears up and drives to the clinic.

AC No Boys Braile

Parked outside and before heading inside, there's morse code on a wall that translates to "NO BOYS". This writing is likely an easter egg, and is also a major clue that the twins never existed because, before near the end of Chapter III, there was no evidence that the twins were miscarried/not real.

While investigating the clinic, John found a woman standing in a dark room cradling a baby. He tried asking if she had seen Nate and Jason, but she responds that they belong to Gary. When he attempted to leave, she turned hostile and attacked him before he banished her and returned home without evidence of the boys' location.

October 29th, 1987[]

Mother Boss Room

John gets yet another new letter from Father Garcia instructing him to investigate an apartment complex in New Haven to see if Malphas would be summoned there. John also gets letters from Lisa, a childhood friend, who needs his help from her creepy neighbors. John drives to the apartment complex.

Saving Lisa from Alu's clutches and defeating Tiffany in the Unseen World, John was unable to locate the twins or where Malphas might be summoned, so he went home.

October 30th, 1987[]

John, while experiencing a nightmare, was looking for Amy in it, and could enter every room except the twins' room, saying "I don't remember anything further." Waking up, he finds a new letter from Father Garcia, telling him to investigate a daycare center on 4th Street due to reports of children acting strange. This time, he sternly believes that if the twins are there than that's where Malphas will be summoned. John parks nearby, avoiding police officers stationed outside, and went inside.

October 31st, 1987[]

After finally encountering the dreaded Gary, he grants John three questions. When he asked about the twins, Gary's face distorted and chuckled as he revealed the truth: the twins were illusory, and he teases John that he always suspected they were not real, he could not resist chasing after lost souls and thus they would make good bait. Oddly, Gary himself wished they had been real like Mrs. Martin believed. Gary used them regardless, knowing that John, saying that he knew deep down the twins were illusions, that he couldn't resist chasing after lost/hurt souls. Gary supposes that he wished they were real like Mrs. Martin.

Although John always had an inkling that the twins were not real, this revelation was still devastating for him since his entire journey up to that point was pointless. This wild goose chase would ultimately lead up to Gary meeting John, where he can pin him and perform the Second Death ritual on him, which is his other goal if Amy never woken up from her coma. Gary also reveals that Malphas was already summoned, further proving that prevailing was useless.

Regardless, John defeated Gary and his Unholy Trinity, granting him the choice of a new purpose in life either fighting demons with Father Garcia or starting a new life with Lisa.

October 31, 1987 (Ending III: A New Vessel)[]

Michael Scurrying Ending 3

On this alternate date, John decided not to investigate the Daycare Center on the 30th and just stayed home. After a nightmare, John wakes up and finds that his entire neighborhood is being overrun by thralls. Deciding to look into a room covered in crucifixes one more time, he narrowly avoids getting eaten by a demonic centipede in his basement and grabs a key. He unlocks the room, revealing Amy standing motionless in the middle of the room among filing cabinets, wearing the same outfit she had back in 86'. John kneels in front of her and asks what they (the thralls) want from him and why she's tormenting him. He doesn't know how she ended up in the room. Before asking for his nightmare to end, Amy's mouth opens and a demonic hand grabs his face, shouting "UNFORGIVABLE".

John is seemingly teleported in The Forest nearby the Martin House. Catching a glimpse of Michael scurrying away, he enters inside the dilapidated house.

Walking into each room, he monologues how guilty he is over failing Amy and her parents. Going inside the twin's room, there's two broken mannequins nearby a graffiti of an eye. He kneels in front of them, emotionally defeated, and yields to them by throwing up his arms. Suddenly, Michael and Amy (with her red, gaping hole) appear and holds his hands steady. As the room, mannequins, and the two disappear, John keeps his arms up as a giant demonic hand grabs him. Shrouding into the darkness, the hand and the entire house disappears, where the game ends.

John never realizes that the twins' miscarriage was not his fault, and never got confirmation that they even existed from Gary. This ending and its title "A New Vessel", implies that he submitted to becoming a vessel for the UNSPEAKABLE to possess; almost similar to the bad ending of Chapter II. Here, he succumbs to guilt, while in the other case he submits to his evil urges.

Trivia[]

  • The fact that the twins were miscarried implies that they died in Cindy's womb before May 3rd, since miscarriages can happen before the 24th week of pregnancy. It would have been more accurate to describe them as stillborns since the babies could have died after the 24th week or while they were being delivered.
    • For brevity's sake, we're going to keep their death date as May 3rd, 1980, because the words "miscarriage" and "stillborn" are used interchangeably. Although it could have given foresight that Cindy was planning on their intended birthdate, you can't exactly dictate what day in a month they'll be born. The likely intention was that Cindy was delivering and her babies died.
  • The twins are the only major characters in the series that do not speak or vocalize in any form.
    • This could apply to the UNSPEAKABLE but it is heavily implied that the demonic writing in a newspaper article in Chapter II (and the Red Demon's speech in the teaser trailer for Chapter II[1]) is from this entity.
    • Besides, the UNSPEAKABLE makes animalistic wailing during John's hallucinations. The twins don't make any noise, just like the Red Demon and the Skeletal Figure.
  • One major difference between The Unholy Trinity's version of Chapter I and the standalone version of Chapter I is that we can see the twins running in The Forest to direct John towards the Martin House.
  • There seems to be strange ties between the doll and Cindy's increasing delusions. Her dead body is seen directly underneath the doll and while John explores the basement in Chapter I. the doll seemingly fades in and fades out near a baby cradle. Check the doll's wiki page for some theories.
  • The Martin Twins and the Doomed Child are not to be confused as the same people. Since the twins never existed, there's no way any of them could've been involved in the incidents at Snake Meadow Hill Church.
    • Since the twins are spotted first in Chapter I, the Doomed Child reuses their standing and running sprites in Chapter II.
  • Currently we have no idea how Garcia learned who the Twins, Amy, and what happened to her. He seems to have some connection with authorities since he has access to the state foster care system. At least back in the 80s, the system isn't publicly available.
    • Overall, Garcia is vague and a stranger to John. Although we, the player, know about what Garcia dealt with Michael, John doesn't know this. Until near the end part of Chapter III, John has never seen Garcia face-to-face and blindly trusts what someone is saying in letters.
  • Since the twins never existed, the drawing on the fridge labelled by Nate is implied that Cindy drew the picture during one of her many delusions before she was killed.
  • The reason why the obituary states that Jason and Nate are survived by their parents in Chapter II could be because everything experienced in John's nightmare are influenced by him. He still thinks that the twins are still alive, so it's mentioned in the obituary. We can't credibly discern whatever we see in his nightmares as fact since there's a drawing of Snake Meadow Hill Church labelled by Amy during a flashback of the first failed exorcism. Amy was born sometime in 1969, so there's no way she would know about the incidents at that church.
  • Gary refers to the twins as lost souls probably because the whole family is involved in some kind of demonic activity (Bob finds a cursed doll while working as a missionary, Cindy is delusional and sees/draws demonic figures, Amy is possessed.) that they never wanted to be a part of. This demonic influence on the family might've prevented them from moving on to Heaven. He also calls them as hurt souls since they never had the chance to grow-up from childhood to adulthood.
  • The filenames for the two mannequins are called "boy effigies".
