The Mist Demon is a demonic enemy that makes its grand appearance in Chapter II. It reappears as an apparition in Chapter III.

Alike all the other demons haunting Gallup Cemetery, the Mist Demon is loosely affiliated with one of the thralls within Save Family Tomb and loosely connected with the short story of Note #6, detailing a child who's been pressured into repaying some kind of debt after being locked in a basement with his "grandfather".

Appearance[]

The Mist Demon nearly resembles a human but has stubby legs & arms and two red, glowing eyes. It has an odd-looking, tail-like appendage.

Personality[]

Normally, demons in the series don't have a personality besides being evil, but in this case, the Mist Demon's cries sounds like it comes from a child who's in severe distress or pain. It doesn't actively try to kill John and just hides away in the mist while screaming.

Biography[]

Unknown Time[]

It's important to analyze Note #6[1] from Chapter II because the child detailed in there, which we're assuming to be a younger version of a man named Angel Nogales (this'll be explained later), is affiliated with this demon.

Angel recounts when he used to be a child and the feeling of devastation after losing his grandfather, whom he was deeply attached to. One day, his stepmother promised him that he can see his grandfather again. He agreed to follow her in desperation and was dropped off at one of her friend's houses late at night. Angel was lured by her friends to walk down a staircase towards the basement, where he saw his grandfather standing in the darkness. At first, he was gleeful, but as he approaches who he thought was his grandfather, he comes into realization that it wasn't really him. Angel tried to run away from whoever it was, but the basement door was locked.

The note ends that, although his memory is hazy on what happened next, his stepmother's friends have been pressuring him to fulfill some kind of debt and doing work for them. This note essentially provides a backstory as to how he inadvertently joined the Eternal Order of the Second Death, the cult conducting operations within Sterling, Connecticut. The Mist Demon seems to be some sort of manifestation of whatever happened between Angel and his "grandfather", but that's difficult to connect with this note alone.

Between September 22nd to 27th, 1987[]

To keep this undetermined date brief and relevant enough for the Mist Demon, Angel, a cult member named Troy Ingles, and another named Sandra Attwood, were sacrificially murdered for some kind of undetailed ritual nearby. The Sterling Police Department found their bodies off into the dense woodland nearby a cemetery, aptly named Gallup Cemetery, and identified them. A newspaper article was published[2] shortly after their investigation, where investigators state that they believe the victims were ultimately killed in some kind of paganistic ritual. They plead for the Sterling community to contact authorities if there's any leads behind the murders.

This article, Note #18 from Chapter II, was important to analyze because it's heavily suggested that the areas John will eventually explore in his dream/Chapter II, Gallup Cemetery in particular, were affected by recent murders and disappearances that all connect to the cult in some way or another. John essentially dreams of the locations and the demons he'll eventually face, including the Mist Demon, in some vein attempt of making a significant difference as if he was there[3].

September 28th, 1987 (Chapter II)[]

John falls asleep like any other day and experiences his worst nightmare yet.

The dream begins with him standing in the middle of five pebbles. He meanders through the trees and unlocks a gate leading to Gallup Cemetery. A tomb, named Save Family Tomb, lies in the middle of the cemetery. All the other nearby gates are locked, so John has no choice but to investigate inside.

enter the spirit house[]

The cramped tomb has three thralls giving John a cold stare, either because of his priestly outfit or they're dead.

Spirits flee from the bodies and scatter throughout the area. John exits the tomb and has to track each of them down in order to move beyond the cemetery.

Walking to the left and downward, mist surround the area. John walks towards the middle of the area and a demon appears from nowhere, making unintelligible, child-like screaming. It darts from one cloud of mist to another in some attempt of hiding from something. Among all the other demons within Gallup Cemetery, this demon doesn't actively attempt to kill John.

John banishes the demon, who bellows one final cry before bursting into a puddle of blood. It leaves behind a note detailed in the "Unkown Time" section. If John visits the tomb before banishing the other two demons, the bald thrall is nowhere in sight. With this in mind, we can assume that the Mist Demon is somewhat affiliated to Angel's traumatic childhood from whatever happened between him and his "grandfather".

October 31st, 1987 (Chapter III)[]

We skip forward to John battling against the cult leader, Gary, in a secret underground tunnel named Garyland. During the fight, Gary has a chance of summoning ghostly apparitions of demons and creatures John has encountered in the past, including the Mist Demon. Alike all of the past enemies, they're red silhouettes, cannot be repelled by the crucifix, and knock John to the ground if they make contact with him. It's important to point out that Gary can summon two different versions of a woman named Tiffany, signifying that these red apparitions are solely phantoms and are not literally summoned from where they used to be to kick down John. They purely function as bad memories. This is the last time the Mist Demon makes its appearance.

Trivia[]

  • Typically, Miriam copies the same attack pattern from every demon within Chapter II, except for this one. That's probably because there's nowhere for her to hide.
