The Peekaboo Demon is a demonic enemy that appears in FAITH: Chapter II and Chapter III.
This demon has a lengthy history of killing drug addicts and prostitutes living within a sewage system nicknamed the Candy Tunnels by Sterling locals. At some point after fending off the Sterling Police Department, it was relocated and summoned by cult members to an unnamed apartment complex in New Haven, Connecticut. Its primary task is to somehow aid the summoning of the UNSPEAKABLE, a great deity worshipped by cult members a part of the Eternal Order of the Second Death, by sacrificially killing its victims. However, for reasons not entirely clear, it began to target Thralls, low-ranking cult members, and savagely kills anyone who comes within its path. The demon attacks Thralls presumably because of Gary's low influence to them as they are a low-ranking cult members.
Appearance[]
It's a gray, armless, feminine, humanoid demon with a bony ribcage and a masculine voice. Its feet are human-like but the sharp toes (or some kind of root-like, wiggly toe) almost make it look like it's walking on its heel. Red bloody hands attached to its face conceals two blood-shot eyes. Occasionally, a large clump of blood falls out of its face. When it attacks, the hands stretch out and the fingers become elongated, revealing a bloody, red mass where its mouth should be. The pupils enlarge as well. The way the hands stretch out almost resembles how an insect would open its mandibles to bite something.
This demon can interact with objects and walls like anybody can, but it's capable of disappearing, teleportation, and phasing through walls when it wants to. It generally prefers to walk around at a brisk pace but can pick up speed when aggravated.
Personality[]
A lot of demonic enemies within the series don't really have a personality besides being evil or a thoughtless monster. The only notable fact to point out is that it can personally attack you, such as calling you a whore or claiming that it knows your secret. This won't be brought up until much later in the "Biography" section.
Biography[]
Background behind this enemy before it got summoned is not entirely clear, so we're going to cut until where it's relevant in the series.
May of 1987[]
Before we go over this demon, we need to explain what the Candy Tunnels are. The Candy Tunnels is a nickname for a dense sewage tunnel within Sterling, Connecticut. It's a well-known home for drug addicts, runaways, gang members, prostitutes, and the homeless to stay & keep a low radar from the public[1]; with the amount of drug paraphernalia littered around the place (as we'll see in Chapter II), that's probably why the sewage was nicknamed as such. This underground activity is poorly received by the Sterling community and the Sterling Police Department, but authorities are too unconcerned and biased towards the demographic to do anything about it[1][2].
Sometime in May of 1987[1], we cut to a satanic cult primarily located within Sterling, the Eternal Order of the Second Death. Their secondary cult leader, Miriam Bell, directs a select few of thralls (low-ranking cult members) and cultists alike to summon the Peekaboo Demon[3]. Basing off of a note found in Chapter III[4], this demon's primary goal is to (somehow) aid the summoning of the UNSPEAKABLE, a demonic deity that the cult worship, so that it can possess a worthy vessel via manufactured injection[5][6][7].
Cult members summon the demon in a secluded area within the Candy Tunnel, somewhere faraway so that the people that live there don't immediately notice or interfere. The demon is summoned into this world by crawling out of a large hole in the ground it made.

The Peekaboo Demon begins to sacrificially & savagely murder the people that live there and drag their bodies down to its lair. Whatever the demon does with the bodies down there is unclear, but whenever the bodies have fulfilled their purpose, the demon intentionally takes out their skulls. The carcasses are strewn around a drainage ditch underneath Snake Meadow Hill Road[1]. Miriam and other cult members hold a ceremony whenever it sacrifices somebody; an unnamed squatter of the tunnels notes how they always hear somebody chanting, an old woman cackling, something large making an unhuman sound, and claims to see red-painted people whose eyes resemble an animal's[3].
July to September of 1987[]
Concerned Sterling locals have taken notice of bodies found around the drainage ditch underneath Snake Meadow Hill Road and contacted authorities[1]. The Sterling Police Department recover the bodies, and the title of Note #20[1] alludes that authorities have made a public statement about the discoveries (but we, the player, are not shown this), but don't bother to investigate the sewers to figure out how people are getting killed down there. Locals suspect that a well-known Rhode Island and Connecticut serial killer, Joe Baumann (who has been given the nickname "Candy Store Killer" prior to the events around the Candy Tunnels), may be lurking in the sewers and killing off whoever he can get[1].
(Skip this section because it does not particularly relate to the Peekaboo Demon) Chapter II's three primary locations, Gallup Cemetery[8], Snake Meadow Hill Church[9], and the Candy Tunnels[1], have a running theme of demonic-related events that are speculated to have released to the public in-between September 22nd and September 27th (between Chapter I and II's events), this means that although locals have found these bodies and authorities recovered them, nothing substantial was done.
Between September 22nd to 27th, 1987[]
Between these two pivotable dates, the Peekaboo Demon killed a traveling couple. It sacrificially used their bodies and cult members strewn their corpse around a drainage ditch. Sterling locals discovered the bodies once again and reported it to the authorities. The Sterling Police Department makes an official statement about the discovery and seems to uphold some kind of concern[1], likely because the couple were not associated with the squatters who live in the tunnels at all. Titled, "2 MORE DEAD DISCOVERED OUTSIDE 'CANDY TUNNEL' NEAR STERLING", the article is about the discovery stated earlier. The article continues that the Candy Tunnels have been a site of gory discoveries within the past three months (from July to September). Ever since May, five bodies in total have been discovered and recovered. The article ends that concerned Sterling citizens fear that these discoveries may be connected to the Candy Store Killer.
Shortly thereafter this, the Sterling Police Department caved in from the local's concerns and plan to raid the sewers[10]; they too suspect that Joe Baumann might be hiding within the sewage system. On the day of the raid, few locals stood nearby as police officers prepare to storm the sewage and look for the serial killer. About ten minutes after they raided the area, the locals hear gunshots.
The next day, a newspaper article titled, "MULTIPLE OFFICERS WOUNDED, FOUND DEAD IN SEWER TUNNEL SHOOTOUT" was released[10], detailing how multiple officers were downed and one deputy fatally wounded after an exchange of gunfire inside the sewer system. Witnesses report hearing gunshots ten minutes after officers raided since they suspected Joe Baumann was lurking in there. The article ends that they're not sure how many officers were wounded nor if Baumann was ever injured. They are making efforts to recover casualties after raiding the tunnels.
An unnamed police officer who was participating in the raid jots down on a piece of paper on what he witnessed in the sewers[2]. He remarks how there was no Candy Store Killer and what the department are dealing with isn't human. When he briefly got separated from other officers, he saw a "thing" dragging down the remains of another officer called Jenkins into its lair. At that point, he "understood", saying that all the tweakers, bums, child-runaway prostitutes and people with GRID (An outdated and discriminatory term for AIDS; This note details how at least a portion of the Police Department are biased towards the squatters that live in the tunnels) can return to the tunnels for all he cares so that they can satiate the "thing's" thirst to kill. He connects the killings to a legend his grandmother talked about where villagers sacrificed their own once a year so that a beast won't annihilate everyone, sort of how one would make a deal with the Devil.
In summary, the Peekaboo Demon was the one who fought back against the raiding police officers, hence why witnesses heard gunshots roughly ten minutes after they stormed inside. It's more than likely that the Police Department know that Joe Baumann was not lurking in the tunnels at all, and there's some kind of creature killing off people inside there, but they don't want to scare the public and keep the situation on a low radar. This would explain why the article was so vague on whether or not Baumann was injured, killed, or even there at all. Unfortunately, we never get an update on how the Police Department dealt with this but basing off a surplus of police officers planning to raid a Daycare Center in Chapter III, they probably held suspicions that something otherworldly going on.
Additionally, basing off the Peekaboo Demon's appearance in the New Haven Apartment Complex in Chapter III, it's best to assume that cult members relocated the demon so that authorities would not interfere again. Although the demon is sturdy enough to fight back against large portions, the cult does not want to risk any chances.
(Before we begin Chapter II's section, it's important to reiterate here that Note #20 and #19 are undated. Since Note #18, another newspaper article detailing the deaths of three young people around Gallup Cemetery, heavily suggests that it was published between the 22nd and 27th of September, and our main protagonist John Ward dreams of this cemetery as if he can make a difference, then this would mean that the Peekaboo Demon killing two people and a trio of paranormal investigators suddenly vanishing after exploring Snake Meadow Hill Church also took place between the 22nd and 27th. Unless we get any differentiating evidence, we're going to keep this date as is.)
September 28th, 1987 (Chapter II)[]
A week after John Ward failed his second exorcism of Amy Martin, he falls asleep at his home and experiences his most vivid nightmare, which seems to be demonically influenced by the UNSPEAKABLE.
After navigating through Gallup Cemetery, Snake Meadow Hill Church, and the Unseen World as a Wretch, John approaches a drainage ditch that leads towards the Candy Tunnels. He spots a travelling couple attempting to fix their broken pickup truck on top of an overpass.

John enters the sewage system.

death awaits[]
The area is littered with syringes, skeletons, graffiti, broken bottles, and other drug paraphernalia. John purifies two skeletons that drop newspaper articles mentioned previously[10][1]. Exploring some more, John spots a Thrall running around in the pipes as he walks into a room with four pillars. Each pillar contains certain parts of a sentence, and piecing the words together, the graffiti says, "When You See It, DON'T MOVE" John investigates the next room and notices pools of blood around a specific pillar. As he attempts to walk towards the next room, the Peekaboo Demon appears from behind the pillar.

The demon stumbles towards him and shouts, "MOTHER?" It approaches and stares directly at his face; a blood-shot eye protrudes from its hands to stare down at John, tempting him to twitch.

John stays absolutely still and doesn't use his crucifix. The demon eventually shambles away towards the next room above. Alternatively, if John moved an inch while the demon was walking away, the demon senses he moved and turns around. It gets aggressive as its pupils dilate and the hands open up. The fingers elongate as the demon shouts, "YOU WHORE!" It gains speed and butchers John.

In the next room, John notices blood trail leading towards a wall, hinting that the demon is a tangible spirit that can phase through objects whenever it wishes.

Entering the broken pipes and walking towards the right, John spots the Peekaboo Demon's lair in the foreground. There's a note nearby written by the unnamed police officer from earlier[2].

Walking all the way towards the left, John can also pick up a note written by an unnamed squatter who reported hearing strange noises and seeing red-painted people[3]. Beyond this note, the Peekaboo Demon is not seen or mentioned again throughout the nightmare. Eventually, when John wakes up after witnessing the UNSPEAKABLE emitting flashing red lights[11], he finds a letter written by a stranger named Father Garcia[12], instructing him to find Amy's twin brothers, Nate and Jason, before the cult uses them on the Profane Sabbath to summon a great demon named Malphas. He'll have to wait until there's any updates about the twin's current location. John hops into his car and speeds off, probably to clear his mind, and remarks how his nightmares are getting worse & whatever he'll come against next will be worse than his dreams but has to find the twins. He speeds away and Chapter II ends.

Before we go into Chapter III section, we should dissect what the Peekaboo Demon meant by, "MOTHER?" and "YOU WHORE!" Referencing off of Note #21 and the mention of, "an old woman cackling", it's best to assume that was Miriam participating ceremonies whenever the demon would sacrifice somebody into its lair. Since Miriam would be involved with the Peekaboo Demon so much, the demon confused John as her. This confusion is somewhat brought up again in Chapter III. Lastly, "YOU WHORE!" relates to the unnamed police officer's biased note, exclaiming that all the runaway child prostitutes and other people who live in the sewage can satiate the beast's thirst to kill, for all he cares. The demon is used to killing off prostitutes, so that's probably why it said that.
October of 1987[]
This is where the plot becomes uncertain since everything detailed here stems from undated notes found throughout New Haven Apartment Complex.
Sometime within October, the main cult leader, Gary Miller, intends to take over and run an apartment complex in New Haven with the help of thralls and cultists alike. The reasoning behind this is never outright stated. Before we delve into theories, we need to explain Gary's henchwoman, Tiffany Robinson. Tiffany is a young woman who has attempted to sought over Gary's unreciprocated love for an unknown period of time. She's been co-operating a birthing clinic somewhere in Connecticut to appease Gary[13], but he tends to think she's a nuisance[14]. Tiffany lives in the same apartment complex Gary plans to take over, including her friend named Lisa Pearson. We can theorize that Tiffany blabbed to Gary that Lisa can be a suitable vessel for the UNSPEAKABLE to possess and cult members can summon the Peekaboo Demon in one of the apartment rooms in order to use the tenants as sacrifices under the UNSPEAKABLE's name. Like stated before, we don't have straight answers about this, but until we get credible evidence proving or disproving this theory, we'll keep this plan in mind.
Regardless of if this is true or not, Gary and cult members steadily take over the complex without raising suspicion from the Sterling Police Department[15]. It's speculated that thralls would kill the old tenants, store them elsewhere close by[16], and become the new tenants who regularly pay Gary for rent and utilities. Once all the original tenants were annihilated, the Peekaboo Demon is summoned somewhere within the building, who makes a large hole in the ground of Room 3A that functions as its lair and uses the tenants' bodies as sacrifices.
Gary makes an announcement to his fellow thralls that the "Very Special Visitor" (Peekaboo Demon) is here[17], who will pave way for the summoning of the UNSPEAKABLE. Due to its special nature, it has complete full access to every room within the complex, including their apartments, bedrooms, and so on. Gary cautions them that, if anybody was lucky enough to come across the visitor, they should not approach or speak to it; rather, they should find a dimly lit or dark corner and stay out of its way. Gary continues that one of them will be blessed to find the visitor staying in their apartment room and warns to never go down the hole it makes, even if they hear voices emitting down there. He finishes that if anybody suspects their fellow cult members fell into the hole, they should notify him so that he can retrieve their remains in a timely manner.
The way Gary describes the Peekaboo Demon makes it sound like it's a thoughtless killing machine, even though it's capable of speaking. So far, Lisa is still able to walk around the premises but feels uncomfortable from her neighbors. She tries to contact John about her situation since they're childhood friends, and even advises him to meetup with Tiffany if she never answers the door[18]. Apparently, they were good enough friends to lend Tiffany her spare key. Lisa's letter falls on deaf ears; John never replies and seemingly ignores her. Shortly thereafter, Lisa's neighbors are physically preventing her from leaving her room altogether. She sends one final plea for help to John to come rescue her and suspects that Tiffany is somehow behind all of this[19]. This letter will take days, or even weeks, for it to reach John's mailbox considering that Lisa cannot go anywhere, and all of this is undated.
Everything appears to be working well and Tiffany remains loyal. At some undisclosed point, however, Tiffany realizes what Gary's true intentions are: using Amy as a vessel for the Second Death. Tiffany believes that Gary's sights have reached far too low and overflows with jealousy that Amy was granted to become Gary's favorite[20]. She plans to sabotage the cult's usage with Lisa by blocking entry to her apartment room. Gary catches wind of this and makes an announcement to all of his thralls that Tiffany has betrayed his trust and the will of the UNSPEAKABLE[21]. He goads Tiffany to help her friend because the UNSPEAKABLE will crush them both.
Shortly thereafter, Tiffany figures out a way to block Lisa's door by summoning Alu, a goat-like demonic spirit that is not associated with the cult at all. The demon places his seal on Lisa's door so that nobody can enter or leave, and eventually possesses her. Gary notices his presence and the seal he placed over Lisa's door, but still remains respectful by making another announcement to his thrall about his arrival[22]. At some point, Tiffany brings her next plan into fruition by performing her own makeshift Second Death ritual. Tiffany proceeds with the ritual, possibly with the help of other cult members. However, she overdoes it and believes that the reason why nobody has done the ritual successfully is that more than seven sacrifices were needed[16]. So, she uses the sacrifices that were intended for the Peekaboo Demon's usage and becomes an abomination. Her eviscerated head becomes a throne for her new demon to sit on. It controls the majority of her body, save for her speaking. She hides away in the Unseen World version of the 10th Floor to tempt Gary to follow her[23]; either as an attempt to kill him or to show how much better she is than Amy.
With a lack of sacrifices, the Peekaboo Demon has gone rogue and kills anybody who it comes across, regardless of if the person stays still or not[24] (which is an advice that Gary stated to his thralls when it was summoned in one of the apartment rooms[17]). It seems like the demon started killing thralls around its lair. This defection is similar to the short story detailed by the unnamed police officer back in Chapter II[2], explaining how a beast would annihilate everybody if nobody sacrificed to it.

It's near the end of October and the Profane Sabbath is approaching, the one day where demonic powers are at its peak and the preferable day to summon the Antichrist. Gary doesn't have time to deal with Tiffany, Lisa getting trapped within her own room, nor the rampaging Peekaboo Demon, so he abandons it and returns to a secluded area named the Crucible in preparation. Very few thralls are still alive and occupy the complex; A majority of them followed Gary into the Crucible to witness the powers of the Profane Sabbath. By the time John arrives for other matters, the complex is eerily silent.
October 29th, 1987 (Chapter III)[]
Yesterday, John finally received an update from Father Garcia, who instructed him to explore a clinic Amy used to work at to see if the Martin Twins are there or Malphas might be summoned somewhere inside. John did so but the search was fruitless, so he drove back home.
Now the 29th, John is instructed to investigate the New Haven Apartment Complex to see if Malphas might be summoned there. There're two other letters from Lisa at his front door, who asked him to rescue her from her creepy neighbors and to grab a spare key from Tiffany's room. John hops into his car and reaches his destination. He enters inside.

Among the Damned[]
The building appears to be in good condition but it's eerily silent. John can explore anywhere except for the basement. If he lingers in there for too long, two red hands originating from the Peekaboo Demon covers and gouges his eyes, killing him.

Flashing forward a little bit, John takes the elevator to the Tenth Floor and unlocks Room 10M with the key he found from Room 5A/Lisa's Room. Next to the door is a message written on the wall, "Sacrifice What You Cling To" Inside the room is a dumbwaiter and instructions on how to use it. There's also a monitor feed of a camera that points towards the basement of the building. Since there's nothing much else to do, John mutters, "So be it." and places his crucifix onto the dumbwaiter. He watches his crucifix plummet all the way down to the basement.

If John rechecks the monitor, he'll see the Peekaboo Demon standing around the entrance towards the basement. The demon saw his crucifix, dragged it a little farther away, and intends to kill him off because he's completely defenseless.

Attempting to walk down the building via the stairs is impossible; stick dolls block the way. John is forced to use the elevator to retrieve his cross, but the elevator automatically stops at Floor 4 and can't go down anymore. A thrall chuckles and runs away when the elevator door opens. Going to the right, there's a note on the floor, saying, "Gary lied to us. When you see it, RUN"[24] There's a camera down the hallway and a decimated thrall on the ground, with blood next to the body saying, "I SAW IT" John picks up the camera and the lights for the entire building shut down.
John has to traverse through the darkness with the flash from his camera. Taking the staircase to the Third Floor, the rest of the hallway is blocked by more stick dolls, so he has to go inside Room 3B to bypass them. A door leading to Tiffany's bedroom is now open. Her room looks relatively normal besides a secret entrance connecting to Room 3A. However, in the middle of the secret passageway, thralls are twitching their heads and standing around an altar. John sneaks past them undetected and, in the next room, comes across a large hole on the ground (created by the Peekaboo Demon) surrounded by dead thralls and a green person, likely a tenant.

John walks out of the room and goes down to the Second Floor. More stick dolls block the way, so he goes inside Room 2A. The staircase underneath a table is now accessible. As John uses his camera as he explores this secret passageway, he sees brief glimpses of the Peekaboo Demon stumbling towards him. By the third time he uses the flash of his camera, the demon greets him with, "MOTHER?" and chases.

John narrowly escapes its grasp while navigating through the darkness and comes out of Room 2B. The demon stopped giving chase for some reason, so John takes the staircase all the way down to retrieve his crucifix. As soon as he picks it up, the lights come back on. Exploring the right area, John comes across an inverted cross made out of blood and satanic symbols; this is where Tiffany performed her makeshift Second Death ritual.
Attempting to leave the basement, the Peekaboo Demon appears and makes its final attempt to kill John in a room littered with candles.

As it teleports around the room, some of the candles on the ground light up, indicating where the demon is. The demon spurts several lines when it gets repelled by the cross, such as "YOU CAN'T HIDE ANYMORE" and "PULL OUT YOUR EYES" With enough times, it says, "YOU BELONG TO HER" and disappears, defeated.
We're unsure if the Peekaboo Demon was truly "killed" at this point or not since it did not splatter into a pool of blood or anything. It's very well that it was sent back to where it came from, Hell most likely, and cannot return back to Earth unless its summoned again. For now, we're going to assume that it "died" on October 29th.
Deciphering the demon's lines is difficult, but it's clear that they're supposed to be personal attacks of when John used to be an orphan at Snake Meadow Hill Church and Miriam used to be his caretaker (this won't be explained here, check John's or Miriam's wiki page). "I KNOW YOUR SECRET" may be alluding to how John, and Lisa, turned into Wretches ever since they escaped from whatever Miriam did to the other orphans back in the 50s (check Wretch's wiki page). "BETRAYER" and "YOU CAN'T HIDE ANYMORE" are also nods to Miriam and John's shared history; clearly Miriam wanted to use John and Lisa for some other unexplained motive, but they were able to escape and live the rest of their lives. The Peekaboo Demon tries to coax John to return back to her, and failure to do so is betrayal. This theory is further supported with the lines, "SHE IS ALWAYS WITH YOU", and "YOU BELONG TO HER", where "Her" and "She" relate to Miriam. Unfortunately, history behind whatever happened at Snake Meadow Hill Church and between Miriam and the orphans remains a mystery.
In the end, John was able to banish Alu, rescue Lisa, and defeat Tiffany in the Unseen World. There were no signs of Malphas or the Twins, so John drove back home.
October 31st, 1987[]
We flashforward to a battle between John and Gary within Garyland, a secret underground tunnel system underneath a daycare center. During the fight, Gary has a chance of summoning ghostly apparitions of demons and creatures John has encountered in the past, including the Peekaboo Demon. Alike all of the past enemies, they're red silhouettes, cannot be repelled by the crucifix, and knock John to the ground if they make contact with him. It's important to point out that Gary can summon two different versions of Tiffany, signifying that these red apparitions are solely phantoms and are not literally summoned from where they used to be to kick down John. They purely function as bad memories. This is the last time the Peekaboo Demon makes its appearance.

As a small footnote, John could never encounter and defeat this demon at all if he skipped venturing to the New Haven Apartment Complex, hence why its status is Determinate.

Trivia[]
- The reason why this demon is filenamed "Peekaboo Demon" is because the way its hands covers its face is how anybody would play peekaboo.
- Here's a small explanation as to why this demon is a spirit and not a creature/physical being. It's not a real creature like Michael or Jeffrey because it's capable of phasing through walls. It's not made of flesh because, in this series, flesh-colored demonic creatures are color-coded brown, like the Elevator Friend and Malphas. Since the Peekaboo Demon has a lengthy history of killing people in the Candy Tunnels and there's a surplus of dead thralls within the New Haven Apartment Complex, we can assume it's one of the few tangible evil spirits throughout the series.
- It's highly debatable whether or not all the other demons throughout the series, ranging from the Umbilical Cord Demon to the Mirror Demon, are just figments of John's delusions.
- Originally the enemy was classified as a creature because it can walk around, but everything that it can do doesn't line up as a creature.
- This means that the Peekaboo Demon, Cornfield Maze Demon, Spindly Lady, and Alu are the only "real" evil spirits that have attacked other people.
