The Shopkeeper is a farmer who sells perks and items to John between demon waves. He exclusively appears in Faith: Demon Siege.

Biography[]

Not much is known about this farmer since he never really acknowledges John, only saying "Don't need that!" or "Not enough cash!" when John's inventory is full or doesn't have enough funds. With context clues, we can conclude that he's a farmer, married/partnered with somebody judging by the portrait behind him, and has a rude demeanor since he only scowls. He's a bit laid back too by looking at his body posture. He wears overalls, has unkempt hair, and wears boots. His in-game color is purple.

September 29th - October 27th, 1987[]

The screen fades to John standing in the middle of a forest. There's an item shop nearby so he goes inside. In there, the Shopkeeper sells various goods that can either help, hinder, or be completely useless for John's battle against upcoming demons. Although there will always be a medkit, holy water, and a bullet speed/reload upgrade, there's one item that's randomized. Sometimes, that randomized item could be a Rosary that can unlock the door on a shed nearby, a Saint Peter object that instantly banishes demons, an Ichthys object that makes fish spawn near ponds, The Anarchist Cookbooks that makes demons explode when banished, a Demonology Book that makes demons spawn faster, and more. The Shopkeeper doesn't care less and just wants the money John gets while fighting demons.

Getting more upgrades and banishing demons, including Miriam and Michael, the stress from the onslaught of demons culminates on Wave 15. After preparation time is over, the Red Demon is seen standing on top of the Shopkeeper's shop. Suddenly it explodes, revealing it was the UNSPEAKABLE in an alter ego. The shop is destroyed, debris is scattered everywhere, and the Shopkeeper's bones remain.

Dodging the UNSPEAKABLE's projectiles and exorcising it long enough, it explodes in a bloody mess in defeat. Debris from the shop and burnt stumps of trees litter the area; John drops his crucifix and stares optimistically at the setting Moon and the game ends. This is the last time we see the Shopkeeper.

Trivia[]

  • The portrait behind the Shopkeeper is a reference to a popular painting called American Gothic, where a farmer and his daughter (commonly mistaken as his wife) look to the audience solemnly.

Here's the painting and the wikipedia article about it[1].

  • The Shopkeeper and Cindy Martin are the only two human characters who don't have any spoken lines, even though they're capable of talking.
