The Traveling Couple are a pair of minor characters that briefly appear in FAITH: Chapter II.
Biography[]
Before September 28th, 1987[]
Sterling locals have been pressuring the Sterling Police Department to investigate a sewer system nicknamed the Candy Tunnel since they discovered five bodies nearby a drainage ditch in June, believing a notorious serial killer called Joe Baumann (or the Candy Store Killer) is the culprit and might eventually target everyday people. However, the sewers get a bad reputation by the community since they're occupied by drug addicts, prostitutes, and the homeless. The department is too biased towards these demographics to care.
However, between these two dates, locals found two bodies in a drainage ditch (who seem to be the traveling couple that we'll see soon) and pressured the department to do something since they aren't affiliated with the tunnels. The department finally caved in and raided the sewage. The next day, a newspaper article was released that details how multiple officers were injured and one of them was killed during a shootout. They aren't stating if Baumann was injured or killed but are planning to recover from their casualties.
September 28th, 1987[]
A week after John's second failed exorcism of Amy, he experiences his worst nightmare yet. After he melts into a Wretch, he crawls around the Unseen World and discovers a drainage ditch. Crawling under an overpass, he turns back to his regular self. When he looks above, he sees a traveling couple, where the man is trying to fix the truck's engine while the woman stands nearby. If John goes downward to where he came from, the path back to the Unseen World is unavailable. There's an incline nearby where he could reach the couple but it's too steep for him to go up. At the end of the ditch, there's a hole with the words, "candy tunnel" drawn on top. He heads inside. If he exorcises one of the skeletons, it drops a note that details two bodies found in a ditch and locals are pressuring authorities to investigate. These two dead bodies very well allude to the couple John just saw previously. Canonically, this is the last time they're referenced.
Initiation[]
In this alternate timeline, John picked up a note nearby Save Family Tomb in Gallup Cemetery that instructs the reader on how to receive the UNSPEAKABLE's blessing. John did so by creating a pentagram with his own blood and luring a child to get taken in a confessional booth in Snake Meadow Hill Church. The final step is to, "walk among the children of men as His demon." When he turns into a Wretch and reaches the drainage ditch, he's speedy enough to go up the incline and approach the couple. The couple see the spidery creature approaching them and they try to escape, but John butchers them separately, avoiding getting ran over by a speeding semi-truck in the process. John goes back down the incline and transforms into his normal self by crawling under the overpass and proceeds as usual. With all conditions complete, John will "wake up" from the nightmare and induct himself into the Eternal Order of the Second Death. Otherwise, this is the last time the traveling couple are mentioned.
Trivia[]
- In the game's files, their sprites are named "boy" and "girl" respectively. Thus, "Traveling Couple" is a fan name.
- The woman's sprites were later reused in Chapter III for Lisa's sprites, but with a yellow color instead of magenta.
